The Golden Age (of the '60s)

We clipped so smartly into life!
We hit no panic, feared no strife
and let our hearts with pleasure fill
from top ten charts and smoky thrill.

Wilson bore us:
    swinging London nurtured us.
From war's end young in broken streets
to twenty years. A dreaming age.
In long hot summers mini skirts and kaftans:
    Lennon was our guide.
        We scrabbled Sartre.
            Empire fell.
It could be said we had the air
of masqueraders not believing in the luck we shared.

And now when I creep up to bed
I light that candle in my head
and pray that all these days may be
unrivalled in infinity.
